Taking medications as prescribed

Dr. Anita Sharma provides professional insight and practical tips to answer your medication questions

Member: I’m finding it difficult to stick to my medication routine. Sometimes I forget, and they often just give me unpleasant side effects. Is it fine to skip a dose? —Robert, Mankato

Anita: Hi, Robert. It may not seem like a big deal to skip a dose of your medication, but it’s actually very important to stick to your medication routine as prescribed by your doctor. Skipping or altering a dose could lead to your disease getting worse, which could result in hospitalization. You may not even feel the effects of skipping a dose right away, but it can lead to further damage to your body down the road.

I’m sorry to hear that your medication is causing unpleasant side effects. You, your doctor and your pharmacist should work together to ensure that your medications are working well for you. It’s possible there’s a different prescription that could ease the side effects you’re experiencing. Oftentimes, lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise can also help improve your quality of life. But please remember to talk with your doctor and pharmacist before changing your medication or starting any new diet or exercise routine.

Building and maintaining a relationship with your pharmacist, who works with your doctor, can be especially helpful to talk about concerns you have with your medication experience and to make sure your medications are working the best for you. At no additional cost, you can schedule a review of your medications through the Medication Therapy Management (MTM) services with one of our pharmacists. They can talk with you about any problems you’re having with your medications, side effects, or reactions with other drugs you’re taking. If you are interested in an MTM consultation, call 1-866-873-5941 (TTY 711), Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central Time.
