WE MIGHT BE in the waning days of summer, but there’s still time to experience arguably the best feature Minnesota has to offer: the lakes, streams and rivers. Whether you’re soaking in the scenery or taking a dip, here are some ways to enjoy the water. Ways to get out and enjoy the water in Minnesota 6 thrive. by JAKE WEYER
Grab a Paddle
Hop in a canoe, kayak, or if you’re feeling up to it, grab a paddleboard. Many parks including those in the Twin Cities offer rental services for all of these and paddle boats as well. Paddling across the water is a good workout and a great way to explore our lakes, communities, and wildlife from a different perspective.
Beach It
There’s no need to wait for your tropical vacation to pull out the swimsuit. Minnesota boasts thousands of beaches, many with pavilions and umbrellas to stay cool in the shade between dips in the lake. Take a friend, grab a favorite book and pack a picnic lunch—just don’t forget the sunscreen, and to stay hydrated! You can also benefit from a walk on the beach. According to the Mayo Clinic, walking on variable terrain, like sand, can help boost your balance
Drive the North Shore
Watch 1,000-foot ships pass under the Lift Bridge in Duluth, grab a slice at Betty’s Pies in Two Harbors, hike the trails at Split Rock Lighthouse or Gooseberry Falls. The things to do along Lake Superior are endless and can keep you out and enjoying some of the best of what Minnesota has to offer for days.
Take a Cruise
If you’re looking to learn about the lakes, mingle with others, or just take in the views, a boat cruise is just the ticket. Many tour boats are waiting for you, from the Lady of the Lake paddlewheeler on Lake Minnetonka to the Pelican Breeze on Albert Lea Lake. Costs and times vary and reservations are commonly needed.
Cast a Line
Whether you’re angling from shore, a dock, or a boat, our state has no shortage of fishing opportunities. And while the sport is often associated with relaxation, all of that casting, reeling, standing and walking is also doing your body good. Fishing is also a great way to socialize and bridge generations—take a grandchild!
