Support for caregivers

New resources aim to help caregivers and their loved ones

Roughly 34 million Americans provide unpaid help and support to older loved ones.*

They take many forms: They’re adult children, siblings, spouses, neighbors, or friends. Some live with their loved ones, others across town. And they do everything from sharing a cup of tea to managing medications and attending doctor visits. Their situations vary widely, but all of these individuals are caregivers.

AARP data shows that 84 percent of caregivers say they could use more information or help. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota aims to provide that much needed help with a new website developed specifically for caregivers and the older adults they care for. The site, expected to launch in February, will serve as a one-stop resource for information on home services, housing options, tools and education for managing care, supporting loved ones with advanced illnesses, and much more.

An exclusive online tool will help identify caregivers’ challenges and point to the resources and strategies they need most, and Blue Cross members and people taking care of members may even be referred to one-on-one phone support. Look for more details on the new site from Blue Cross in the coming months.
